Leading the Way

What makes a leader? What makes a leader GREAT?

After years of working with a variety of businesses I have witnessed many “leaders”. I have observed leadership methods that work, methods that don’t and complete lack of leadership by those claiming to be in charge. I have seen individuals who, from the outside appeared born to lead yet behind the scenes what plays out is quite the opposite. I am also fortunate enough to have witnessed individuals rise to the occasion and find the leader within! (I LOVE it when this happens!)

Without hesitation I can say what it boils down to is respect. To be a leader you must be respectful of others in order to earn the mutual respect of your team. All of the managerial attributes that look good on paper will mean nothing if they can't translate in a way that resonates positively and effectively with those around you.

An amazing leader in business and in life, fundamentally will never be in that role for the benefit of themselves alone. They take up the mantle to help others grow into their potential and thrive. Ego is set aside by a true leader and the needs of others will be paramount.

If leadership is approached for the “leader” to get ahead and not the whole team, it will never work. There will be discord, resentment and a loss of the people surrounding that individual. I’ll bet money on that.

A great leader is a mentor and guides the development of leadership skills in others. They will always lead by example. We can not expect others to do and go where we will not. Showing versus telling builds connections of respect, trust and fairness.

We are all capable of being exceptional leaders! Now more than ever our families, communities, workplaces and governments need individuals who are willing to look beyond themselves and be a mentor and support for others.

Lead the way!

With love,

Meg
